Speech Delay and Preschool in Johor Bahru — How a Classroom Assessment Can Help
If your child's speech seems slow to develop, the most useful first step is an honest, classroom-context picture of where they are. This bilingual guide explains how Sunshine Kid's educational-psychology-led assessment supports a child with delayed speech — what it observes, what it is not (it is not a clinical diagnosis), and how the written report helps the professionals you choose to work with.
My child has a speech delay — can a Johor Bahru preschool help?
A classroom-context learning-readiness assessment can observe your child's communication, social interaction, and attention in a real preschool setting and produce a written report you can share with a clinician. A language-rich, structured preschool environment with daily peer interaction can support a child with delayed speech — but it starts with understanding where your child is today.
Does Sunshine Kid diagnose speech or developmental delay?
No — and we will always be clear about that. The assessment is a structured classroom observation led by a Master of Education in Educational Psychology. It documents what your child can and cannot yet do and flags anything worth investigating. It does not diagnose, and it does not replace a speech-language therapist, clinical psychologist, or paediatrician. When a clinical evaluation is warranted, we tell you plainly and signpost you to registered professionals in Johor Bahru.
What does the RM 99 assessment observe for a child with delayed speech?
In a live class — not an interview room — the assessor watches how your child actually communicates and copes:
- Communication attempts — verbal and non-verbal (gesture, pointing, eye contact).
- Receptive language — following one- and two-step instructions.
- Social engagement — how your child connects with peers.
- Attention — focus relative to age-band norms.
- Regulation — handling transitions and frustration.
You receive a 3–4 page written developmental report and a 30-minute parent debrief — a clear picture and a plan, never a label.
Can I use the written report with a speech therapist or paediatrician?
Yes — the report is yours to keep and share, in print and digital. A classroom-context observation captures things a single clinic visit cannot: how your child communicates among peers, across a noisy snack-time-and-transitions day. Parents often bring the report to a speech-language therapist, paediatrician, or another school.
Is a bilingual (English–Mandarin) classroom right for a child with a speech delay?
Bilingual exposure does not cause speech delay, and most children handle two languages well. But every child is different. The assessment lets you see how your child copes with the language environment, so you — and any therapist you work with — can decide together. We give you an honest read, not a sales pitch: if a different setting would serve your child better right now, we will say so.
When should I see a speech-language therapist instead?
If you already suspect a specific condition, or your child is significantly behind peers in understanding or producing language, start with a registered speech-language therapist — and, where relevant, a paediatrician or clinical psychologist. Our assessment complements clinical work; it does not replace it. We are glad to refer you, and the report we produce is useful to bring along.
